Why seat counts lie
A search result that says “4 seats” is making one of five different claims, and most tools flatten them into the most confident one. Here is how to tell them apart.
When an award search shows you a seat count, it feels like a fact: four seats, book two, two remain. But airlines do not report seat counts in one shape. Across the programs we have studied, a number next to a fare is one of five different statements, and they differ in exactly the way that costs travellers money.
The five shapes of a seat count
- An exact count. The program states the remaining award seats in the booking class, and the figure moves when bookings happen. This is the strongest claim, and the rarest.
- A capped display. The program shows “7+” — its interface stops counting above a threshold. The honest reading is a lower bound: at least seven, possibly many more.
- A party-level answer. The program was asked “are there seats for two passengers?” and answered yes. That is not a count of two; it is a yes to two. There may be nine.
- A placeholder. Some booking engines send a fixed number on every fare regardless of reality — one large US program’s engine sends zero on cabins that are, in fact, bookable. A tool that repeats that zero tells you a bookable seat is gone.
- Nothing at all. The program prices the fare and says nothing about quantity. Any number shown here was invented by whoever displayed it.
A number that arrives without its kind is not information. It is a guess wearing a uniform.
What we do instead
Every seat figure in this product carries the confidence it arrived with. An exact count stays exact. A capped display renders as “at least N”. A party-level answer is labelled as one. And where the source publishes a number we know to be a placeholder — that constant zero — we suppress it entirely, because repeating a false zero is worse than admitting we do not know. The result is a page with fewer confident numbers on it than one that repeats every placeholder it is sent, and every number that remains meaning what it says.
